TV Exec: There Could Be a Future for ‘How I Met Your Mother’

One of TV’s most popular sitcoms could make a comeback, at least if 20th Century Fox TV chairman Dana Walden has anything to do with it.

At an upfront (when networks roll out their upcoming lineups) yesterday, she said she’d love to see … wait for it … CBS’s How I Met Your Mother make a return to TV. During a press call, she said: “I hope we will have an opportunity to revisit these characters and tell these stories if [the cast and writers] have the desire to do it. It’s a beloved show that still continues to be popular all over the world.”

It’s not clear what this would look like. And immediately the plan faces some big obstacles: The cast is basically anything but available these days, with Josh Radnor (Ted) leading up a new drama on NBC, Neil Patrick Harris (Barney) doing Count Olaf for Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, Cobie Smulders (Robin) launching her own Netflix show and hanging on to a recurring role in The Avengers franchise and Jason Segel (Marshall) (probably) doing some R-rated rom-com or an indie flick. Alyson Hannigan (Lily) is likely available, though. Regardless, the idea of seeing the cast reunited in some form sounds fun.

This time, though, maybe they shouldn’t ruin everything like they did the last time we saw them.
