I was able to make two playlists for you all. Sorry Jesse, 80s jock rock is just not my thing. I decided to go for the more classic british invasion stuff circa late 1960s, which you may not have been looking for, but it’s grand because it’s classic, so you should take a gander. The old skool stuff was just too incredibly fun listening to as I was putting it together. So thank you.
On that note, here are the playlists with a link to a sampling of the lists themselves if you wanted to have a listen. (Although I couldn’t find every song online, so the linked playlist isn’t complete…but it gives you a pretty good idea of what it would sound like).

OK to start I have a story about Jesse’s song. The Christian summer camp I would go to in the summer would play that song everyday before “recreation”, and the balcony in the chapel shook every time.
Now my British invasion mix tape/ playlist. I am no expert at arranging music and have never took the time to make a “mix tape” so here is my well thought out list.
1 “I Want To Hold Your Hand” The Beatles
2 “Do Wah Diddy Diddy” Manfred Mann
3 “Baby Please Don’t Go” Van Morrison
4 “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” The Animals
5 “I Can’t Explain” The Who
6 “Good Times Bad Times” Led Zeppelin
7 “Badge” Cream
8 “The Seeker” The Who
9 “I Want You (She’s So Heavy) The Beatles (why is she
so heavy?)
10 “She’s A Rainbow” The Rolling Stones

Here is my list of the top ten sports song tracks:
10. Rick Derringer- “Real American”
-For this song to make the list you would have to agree that professional wrasslin’ was a sport. And if I can get you that far, you would have to agree that this patriotic theme song of Hulk Hogan has to make the list.
Perhaps hearing this music associated with her father lead Brooke Hogan to pursue her “wonderfully successful” music career.
9. R. Kelly- “I Believe I Can Fly”
- Many people will recognize this as the “theme” song of the movie Space Jam despite the presence of a song entitled “Space Jam”. The though of Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck, and Bugs Bunny soaring through the air with the likes of Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, and Shawn Bradley is enough to take my breath away and inspire me to never give up on my dreams.
8. Vangelis- “Chariots of Fire”
-Though this movie is very slow and boring at parts, the triumphal ending combined with this mastery of music is very inspirational. In my opinion this HAS To be somewhere on the list.
7. Queen- “We Are The Champions”
-Besides all of the obvious movie appearances (ie. Mighty Ducks), this song could be played every year during an NBA Finals or World Series celebration.
6. Jack Norwoth- “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”
-This classic had become an integral part of every seventh inning stretch until stadiums started playing playing patriotic songs following September 11th. Now that the memories of September 11th are fading away (unfortunately), this song is making a strong comeback as a center piece of every great American baseball game (along with $8 hot dogs and $10 beers).
5. The Alan Parson Project- “Sirius”
Anybody who grew up in the era of Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan will remember this familiar anthem being blared over the PA system at the United Center during the pregame introductions. This still gets me pumped up to watch basketball to this day.
4. Queen- “We Will Rock You”
- The only band that could come close to making the list twice. After a good 10-0 run, late period goal, or multiple run inning, this song has been known to really take the wind out of the visiting team’s sails.
3. Ohio State Marching Band- “Hang on Sloopy”
I know, I know- I am partial because I was born and raised in the Buckeye State and spent my autumn Saturdays glued to my TV watching some smash mouth Ohio State football. And I know they’ve chocked the last couple of years in the BCS Championship…. but… this song has got to be one of the best known and loved anthems in all of college football (and I’m sure the most despised by some fans).
2. Gary Glitter- “Rock and Roll Part 2 (The Hey Song)”
There are few songs that can really get the crowd into a game like this one. Whenever the home team needs a boost from the “6th man”, “10th man”, or “12th man” depending on the sport, don’t be surprised to hear this son blasting over the PA system.
1. Survivor- “Eye of The Tiger”
In my mind this is the undisputed king of sports anthems. Whether its during the Rocky movie or during any moment of a sporting event, this song is emotionally charged and inspiring. I love it, he loves it, she loves it, everybody loves it!
So there is my list of the top ten sports songtracks.

Here is the play list for the ARENA ROCK album. As I see it, the flow is up to the DJ, Who will be on top of his game and will play the witty quote or sound clip when it will be most effective. Hence, the sound clips and TV themes in this mix. The more memorable you can make the comment or song in the game the more your have people talk about it later. Trying to steer clear of the Jock Jam Albums that Jesse already owns, I was looking for something left of center.
Thriller, Micheal Jackson
Wipeout, The Surfaries
Louie Louie, The Kingsmen
I Wanna Be Sedated, The Ramones
Jump, Van Halen
Eye of the Tiger, Survivor
Jump, Kris Kross
U Can’t Touch This, MC Hammer
Welcome to the Jungle, Guns N’ Roses
Rock and Roll all Nite, Kiss
Back In Black, AC/DC
Pour Some Sugar On Me, Def Leppard
Knight Rider theme
A-Team Theme
The “Do I Feel Lucky…”
Dirty Harry quote
Voodoo People, The Prodigy
Bohemian Rapsody, Queen
Whip It, Devo
My Sharona, The Knack
Land of 1,000 Dances, Wilson Picket
Baba O’Riley, The Who
I don’t want to cop out on you Adam but, I was unfortunate enough to grow up without any knowledge of the Hip Hop Old School JAMZ. I didn’t think it would be fair to ask the friends for help (It wouldn’t be my mix). I would like to be educated from the Adam school of Old School Jamz. It would be an honor to be your grasshopper if you would allow. School me in the ways of the Old School Jam. I now present my album art for the Jamz.

I did playlists and covers for The British Invasion and Old Skool
Jamz. I’m pretty happy with my cover for British Invasion, but for
Old Skool Jamz I was going more for the generic mix CDs you always see, so it looks crappy but it’s intentional. I don’t think I’ll have time for Jock Rock, but I’ll send it in if I do.
Thanks,
Aaron

Hello Podcast Crew-
So I am going to attempt to submit a couple of playlists here for the challenge. I am choosing to do both British Invasion and Old-School Hip Hop. I would do a Jock Jamz one but I am not a huge fan of sports so I’m not sure what this would be, all I came up with was a song by Gary Glitter and the Chicago Bulls Intro Song, oh and the Superbowl Shuffle from the Bears.
Now for the British Invasion list I was going to just submit 15 of my favorite Morrissey songs because let’s be honest, what more do you need to be truly English but Morrissey but decided to focus in on the post-punk synth era, so grab a kleenex and weep to the power of synth:
Plainsong-The Cure
This Charming Man-The Smiths
World In My Eyes-Depeche Mode
Killing Moon-Echo & The Bunnymen
Ceremony-New Order
Swamp Thing-The Chamelons
Love Will Tear Us Apart-Joy Division
Cattle And Cane-The Go Betweens
Everyday Is Like Sunday-Morrissey
Nothing-Depeche Mode
Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want-The Smiths
Love My Way-The Psycadelic Furs
This Is The Day-The The
More Than This-Roxy Music
Just Like Honey-Jesus and Mary Chain
OK so for my Old-School Hip Hop one I am definitely going a little underground for this one but the names should be familiar, I don’t think that MC Hammer or Tone Loc is old school hip hop (pop rap maybe but not hip hop) so you won’t find hits like that here:
Planet Rock-Africa Bambatta and the Soul Sonic Force
White Lines (don’t do it)-Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five
The Breaks-Kurtis Blow
Sucker Mc’s-Run DMC
South Bronx-Boogie Down Productions
Public Enemy #1-Public Enemy
I Can’t Live Without My Radio-LL Cool J
Hold It Now Hit It-Beastie Boys
Eric B Is President-Eric B & Rakin
I Got It Made-Special Ed
Rock Dis Funky Joint-Poor Righteous Teachers
So Whatcha’ Sayin-EPMD
Step In The Arena-Gang Starr
Jazz (We’ve Got)-Tribe Called Quest
T.R.O.Y.-Pete Rock and CL Smooth
So there you go, hope you enjoy, take care guys and keep doing your thing, you help more than you can imagine-

Hi, my name is Kevin Davis from the Philly area and I’ve attached my British Invasion playlist. I’m 36 and I started collecting music when I was 8 (1979), so Boys Don’t Cry by The Cure got me hooked on British new wave artists and all of these songs are the flow of 80’s music that really defined my first 8 years of music collecting and are in chronological order of when I started noticing each artist.
Other than The English Beat, I’ve collected every song by all of the artists on this list and my favorite at this point is Depeche Mode.
Great contest and this is my favorite genre of the 3 you asked about so hopefully Lloyd likes my list.
Sincerely,
Kevin Davis

the discussion about pump up songs reminds me of my high school lacrosse team, we’d put on the mortal combat theme song while on treadmills and, as the song’s tempo increased, we’d turn the treadmill up until we reached the top speed of the treadmill. That song was the cause of more hilarious accidents than just about any other song in history.

Long-time listener, first-time contributor here. Felt I had to submit
something on this one since it seemed kind of tailor-made to my interests since: A) I have a deep love of old-school hip hop that often gets me in trouble with the feltboard superstar crowd; B) I feel like I spend half of my life listening to stadium anthems, by virtue of being a sports photographer for my job, and; C) I just got back from two weeks in England with my wife, and we are considering moving to Manchester (her idea, not mine…) So without wasting too much time, here’s the playlist, and interestingly enough, I even noticed some hints of crossover within categories, as well.
*Track 1: The Alan Parsons Project – Sirius (80s Jock Rock #1):* Right off
the bat I am slightly cheating since I think this song was made in the 70s, but I say it qualifies because it didn’t get popular until the 80s when Nebraska football and of course blew up later when the Chicago Bulls began using it as their intro music in the 90s. No other instrumental gets me as hyped, and of course it’s the perfect intro song.
*Track 2: Blur – Song 2 (British Invasion #1):* When you say “British invasion,” want to know what come into my mind? Those silly Brits invading, and then us kicking their bottoms back across the Atlantic, American Revolution Style. Blimey! So for Brit invasion songs I went with UK bands that only made a brief splash into my consciousness before disappearing back to their wee little country. Cross-reference: this Blur track also commonly used as jock rock anthem.
*Track 3: The Notorious B.I.G. – Juicy (Old-School Hip-Hop #1):* I hate to throw out what might be my favorite song on this list so early, but it just feels right in the number 3 slot. Biggie at his absolute lyrical finest in a classic of the genre. Though we never followed through on it, my friends and I always wanted to throw a “dress like your favorite hip-hop lyric” party and we fought over who would have gotten to dress like “Now honeys place me close like butter play toast.” Awesome.
*Track 4: Ozzy Ozbourne – Crazy Train (80s Jock Rock #2): *No other crazy cackle is as instantaneously recognized by football fans everywhere and gets everyone this pumped. Cross-reference: Is British, though he had a little more staying power.
*Track 5: Robbie Williams – Millenium (British Invasion #2):* Another Brit who had his brief stint on the US charts with this hit. Yes, I bought the CD. Yes, I regretted it almost immediately.
*Track 6: Phil Collins – In the Air Tonight (80s Jock Rock #3):* Alright, I can feel your skepticism from here. But seriously, for some reason athletes LOVE this song. It has some sort of ethereal power to it that gets everyone really focused right before a game, which is why every coach has it blasting during warm-ups. And when the drum part towards the end of the song kicks in, every 300-pound lineman stops what their doing to play air percussion along with Phil. A bizarre phenomenon, but a must-include for this list.
*Track 7: Public Enemy – Welcome to the Terrordome (Old-School Hip-Hop #2):*Had to put something to hype me back up and this is my personal PE favorite. Cross-reference: Potential for use as a hip-hop stadium anthem, though “Jump Around” might narrowly beat it out. I think the X-Games used this as their theme song once.
*Track 8: The Verve – Bittersweet Symphony (British Invasion #3):* This song was truly epic, all over the freaking place, but probably disappeared because people couldn’t differentiate between these guys and the similarly-named Verve Pipe so they decided to avoid both.
*Track 9: CL Smooth & Pete Rock – T.R.O.Y. “They Reminisce Over You” (Old School Hip-Hop #3):* One of the truly great lost tracks of old school hip-hop, I never get tired of hearing this song. Cross-reference: athletically-related, since a new generation discovered this song when it was put on the soundtrack to the popular video game NBA Street 2.
*Track 10: Dirty Vegas – Days Go By (British Invasion #4): *We’ll stick with the solemn feeling and go with this wispy Brit track that made me say for perhaps the only time in my life, “hey, maybe British house music isn’t so bad.” Also stands out in my mind as one of my favorite music videos ever.
*Track 11: Joe Esposito – You’re the Best (80s Jock Rock #4):* After those back-to-back sad tracks, you need some encouragement, and look no further than this fist-pumping Karate Kid theme classic. If listening to this song doesn’t make you imagine yourself doing something jock-related in an 80s movie montage, you may not be alive.
*Track 12: Frankie Goes to Hollywood – Relax (British Invasion #5):* As long as we’ve injected some comedy into the playlist, let’s let it hang around a little longer. I INVENTED THE PIANO KEY NECKTIE!!
*Track 13: Erik B & Rakim – You Know I Got Soul (Old School Hip-Hop #4): *Another great classic that got re-discovered by a new generation when Timbaland sampled it in an Aaliyah song. I always enjoy telling my friends when songs on the radio are sampling old stuff they’ve never heard of.
*Track 14: Guns N Roses – Welcome to the Jungle (80s Jock Rock #5):* I tried to go unconventional for most of this category, but this one cannot be ignored. It sends the crowd into a mouth-frothing frenzy because, of course, they’re in the jungle… baby.
*Track 15: Ice Cube – It Was a Good Day (Old School Hip-Hop #5):* A chill track to bring this puppy home. Absolutely had to get someone from NWA in there, and this track beat out their “Express Yourself” and Dre’s “Let it Ride” as my favorite of the three. A song with the ultimate chill factor that you realize in the afterthought is sadder and more poignant that you thought. Cross-over: Best lines of the song? “Messed around a got a triple-double… freaking brothers everywhere like MJ.”
*Bonus Track: Athlete – Tourist (British Invasion #6):* Another chill track for the dedicated listener. They’re from the UK, they’ve been featured in Relevant, I discovered this song through an Adidas ad campaign (Cross-reference!) and they’re far and away better than any British bands I’ve put on this list. A little something positive for Lloyd so he doesn’t think I’m a complete Brit basher.
So there, I tried to incorporate all 3 categories into one playlist. That was tough. Hope you guys enjoy. I’ll try to put an iMix together on iTunes so you guys can listen to samples if desired.
Thanks for the challenge.

Old School Hip Hop Playlist
So I basically had no idea what to theme this around until (while searching Voltron on the web) I came across an old Sprite commercial in which rappers representing each region of the country control one of the 5 lions(You can find the commercial by
searching Sprite + Voltron on youtube). Anyway I tweaked this idea by grouping songs according to the personalities/roles of their counter parts in Voltron, so here it is…
Keith/Black Lion(leader,bookworm,intelligent)..intelligent rhymes..pioneers in hip hop
1. “I Go To Work”-Kool Moe Dee
2. “Don’t Believe The Hype”-Public Enemy
3. “Walk This Way”-Run DMC
4. “The Bridge Is Over”-KRS One
5. “Paid In Full”-Eric B. and Rakim
Lance/Red Lion(jokester,ladies man)..light-hearted songs
6. “Ain’t No Half Steppin’”-Big Daddy Kane
7. “The Breaks”-Kurtis Blow
8. “Award Tour”-A Tribe Called Quest
9. “La Di Da Di”-Slick Rick and Doug E Fresh
Pidge/Green Lion(youngest)..youthful talent with youthful lyrics
10. “Rock The Bells”-LL Cool J
11. “Summertime”-Dj Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince
12. “Fight For Your Right”-Beastie Boys
Allura/Blue Lion(princess, strong-willed)..pioneers of hip hop for women
13. “Push It”-Salt and Pepa
14. “Ladies First”-Queen Latifah
15. “Lyte As A Rock”-MC Lyte
Hunk/Yellow Lion(strong-man, tough/mean looking)..darker side of hip hop

This might not actually be THE playlist, but I tried. This is for Cameron. I tried to avoid the cliched songs so no Sugar Hill Gang and no Grandmaster Flash and no “Walk This Way” or “Fight for Your Right…” Nothing too easy. There is a very particular flow to this playlist so check it out and enjoy!
I hope everything is going well at Relevant.
PS - I would do a Jock Rock and British Invasion playlist too, but I figured I’d just loop Queen and Radiohead records and I already spent way too long on this playlist.
1.* De La Soul: Breakadawn* - In my opinion, the best rap group, ever. De La Soul’s output never lacks quality after 20 years into the game. Infectious beats, positive rhymes, and creative word play. “Breakadawn” is probably one of my favorite beats by De La and will really ease someone into a good rap record.
2. *Beastie Boys: Shake Your Rump* - Granted, these guys don’t have the most charming voices, and their early frat boy personalities were a little off putting. But you can’t deny that Run DMC and the Beasties were responsible for popularizing rap. “Shake Your Rump” is one of my favorite Beastie’s track, and comes off of the Beastie’s most underrated - and perhaps best - record, *Paul’s Boutique*. This one is sure to kick of a party.
3. *Biz Markie: Just a Friend *- In spite of the pseudo raunchy lyrics, this Biz track is not just hysterical, it has an oddly catchy hook. The Biz is too much fun. You really need to see the video to do the track complete justice. Another nice lighthearted track to ease the listener into the fun of old school rap.
4. *Jungle Brothers: Straight Out the Jungle* - Perhaps the least known group of the Native Tongues posse, Jungle Brothers are heavily underrated, and their contribution to alternative hip-hop shouldn’t be overlooked. “Straight Out the Jungle” is a nice minimalist beat amidst the craziness of the first 5 tracks of this playlist.
5. *Run DMC: Run’s House *- No question, one of the best beats of the 80’s. DMC owned the rap scene, and “Run’s House” really encapsulates what DMC was all about: having fun and boasting about inane silliness.
6. *Black Sheep: The Choice is Yours* - It’s hard to understand why Black Sheep didn’t put out more records during their heyday, because their first record was one of the best rap records of all time. “The Choice is Yours” is instantly recognizable, and rightfully so.
7. *Tribe Called Quest feat. Busta Rhymes: Scenario* - Phife Dawg and Q-Tip. Only those two cats have the lyrical wordplay to do justice to this amazing jazz beat. And this perhaps one of the illest verses Busta Rhymes ever wrote. It’s a shame his later output never came close to match his promising start. Two Native Tongue tracks in a row to ease the listener into the cerebral part of the playlist that requires undivided lyrical attention.
8. *KRS-One & Boogie Down Productions: You Must Learn* - The Teacher! Hip-hop’s most prolific mind, and “You Must Learn” really encapsulates the conscious rap movement. KRS still has one of the most commanding voices in rap, and everyone’s got to pay their respect. A great mid-tempo track for a nice pause and some lyrical education.
9.* Eric B. & Rakim: Microphone Fiend* - Come on!!! My favorite verse of all time is perhaps the first verse of “Microphone Fiend.” Every time I listen, I’m blown away by Rakim’s killer lyricism. Just unbelievable. A nice track that requires your fullest attention - pull the listener back in while he perhaps is getting bored of this ridiculously long playlist.
10. *Public Enemy: Rebel Without a Pause* - Chuck D. is furious. His ability to strike fear into the heart of every listener and also command their respect is something that every rapper strives for and Chuck D. was perhaps the first to succeed at it. It’s a shame Public Enemy is a bit of a joke today, thanks to Flava Flav. A great way to kick off the second wind of the playlist.
11. *MC Lyte - Ruff Neck* - MC Lyte was one of the first ladies of hip-hop to command the respect of her male peers. “Ruff Neck” is a nice follow up to Public Enemy’s angry track and a nice segway to the similarly named following track.
12. *Wu-Tang Clan: Protect Ya Neck* - Yes, I do consider Wu-Tang old school. Yes, they are the beginning of New School, but lets not get into specifics. Wu-Tang was the first rap supergroup, and it’s still a miracle that there were so many sick rappers in one group at the same time. Their creativity and inspiration really helped expand the scope of rap music, and their moody “Protect Ya Neck” provides a nice coast to the end of the playlist.
13.* Queen Latifah - U.N.I.T.Y. *- I love Queen Latifah. She may not be hip-hop in the least anymore, but her first 3 rap records are complete gems. “U.N.I.T.Y.” is a sick beat with a great message that calls for the end of misogynistic attitudes in hip-hop. Important and a great prologue to the next track.
14. *Ice Cube: It Was A Good Day *- Ice Cube shouldn’t be an actor because his rap legacy is overshadowed by “questionable” choice in movies. “It Was a Good Day” is a real demonstration of real hip-hop storytelling, something that’s lost with rappers today.
15. *De La Soul/Jungle Brothers/Q-Tip: Buddy *- In my mind, one of the best rap tracks of all time to close out the playlist. Rap used to be all about subtle hints at raunchy subjects, and “Buddy” is the epitome of that. It’s a not the most kosher track, but it’s lyrical wordplay is infectious, and the flow is a nice smooth way to close out the this long long long playlist.

Just to let you know…Peter Jennings died like 5 years ago…
Hey guys, just finished listening to the newwest podcast.
I have no idea where to post my thoughts about the editorial question of the week (hey!) and would like to… an email would be nice letting me know. but if not, i will continue my journey throughout the website.
I am really disappointed that in none of the old school jamz was The Geto Boys, My Mind is Playing Tricks on Me. Its a classic and now the dwarf rapper in the group Bushwick Bill is a Cristian and doing Cristian Rap.
I was impressed with some of the respeonses for the British invasion playlists, but I have my own!!!! I have no idea whether it is too late to send a playlist in, but I am going to anyway.
