Here’s a poem I finished recently after my neighbors moved. I never really knew them.

Neighbors

November 2007
We smile and nod our heads.
Occasionally we say, “Hello.”
We stop and talk over the top of picket fences.
“How are you all doing?”
“Good. How ‘bout y’all?”
Sound bites of sentences
Pieced together over months
Combining to make up a conversation.
“We really need to have you over to diner.”
“We would love to. Give us a call.”
One day a sign shows up in your yard.
The next month your are gone.
We didn’t even get to say, “Bye.”

What was it like when neighbors needed each other? This poem really hits home. With all the entertainment we have its easy to ignore each other, but we cheat ourselves when we do. It is sad to miss out on getting to know another life that came so close and yet so far away from our own.
Hey,
This is so true. Many people never take the time to find out about other people and then when they really want to those people are gone from their lives. I think more people should realize this and take action.
Great Poem, Nick
