Congressman: If Climate Change Exists, God ‘Can Take Care of It’

At a town hall last week, Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) told a constituent that he believes in climate change and thinks “man has had some impact,” but feels that if it’s a real problem, it’s one that God will fix.

From HuffPo, which obtained a video of the town hall:

I believe there’s climate change … I believe there’s been climate change since the beginning of time. I believe there are cycles. Do I think man has some impact? Yeah, of course. Can man change the entire universe? No.

Why do I believe that? Well, as a Christian, I believe that there is a creator in God who is much bigger than us. And I’m confident that, if there’s a real problem, he can take care of it.

It’s possible, of course, that Rep. Walberg is correct. God is certainly capable of miraculously fixing climate change, and we can and should trust Him. But it’s also important that we not depend on cheap grace as an easy out for being responsible with the planet. The Bible is still clear that there can be consequences for our destructive actions.

According to the Washington Post, only half of white evangelicals believe climate change is real, and only a quarter believe humans are responsible for it.
