New Kanye Tour Contains a Skit Featuring a Jesus Character

Kanye West kicked off his Yeezus tour this weekend in Seattle, and along with opening act Kendrick Lamar, the show featured another unexpected guest—Jesus. Toward the end of the show, an actor portraying Jesus appeared on stage as West removed one of the masks he had been wearing for most of the concert, telling Jesus in the skit, “I’ve been looking for you my whole life,” to which the Jesus character replies, “But, I’ve found you. I’ve been here the whole time.” After expressing his shock in an profanity-laced dialogue, Kanye looks to the Jesus character who tells him, “I didn’t come here to make bad people feel good. I came here to make dead people alive. To show people the light.”

As this review of the show from Rolling Stone notes, the concert also contained various religious symbols throughout, a massive mountain-themed stage set, scantily-clad dancers and music mostly off of his decidedly dark recent album Yeezus. According to the RS article, later in the concert, the Christ figure “would ascend to the top of the mountain as West bowed in supplication before him while the haunting refrain from ‘On Sight’– ‘You give us what we need/it may not be what we want’– layed repeatedly in the background” …
