Update: Family Says They DID Tip Gay Waitress and Never Left Negative Note

A few weeks ago, a waitress in New Jersey posted this picture of a receipt that, instead of a tip, contained a handwritten note reading, “I’m sorry but I cannot tip because I don’t agree with your lifestyle and how you live your life.” The story arose after news of a similar incident at a restaurant in Kansas made national headlines. But now, the family who left the receipt in New Jersey says they are the victims of a hoax. According to a local ABC News affiliate, the customers say they have a copy of the receipt and a credit card bill that proves they left an $18 tip on the $93 tab. The couple also says that the handwriting on the note doesn’t match either of theirs. The wife said, “We’ve never not left a tip when someone gave good service, and we would never leave a note like that.”

The restaurant manager refused to produce the original receipt for the news station—though they said they had it—and the waitress is sticking to her story. Neither offered an explanation as to why the credit card bill showed the couple did leave a tip. Since she posted the alleged original note, the waitress has received tips from people across the country, donating some of the money to an organization that supports injured veterans. The wife of the couple told ABC News, “I just felt like people have a right to know that—It’s fine of people want to donate to her or to the Wounded Warriors, but they’re doing it under a false pretense” …
