Never Mind: The Academy Awards Won’t Have a Best Popular Film Category Anymore

Welp, that didn’t last long. Just weeks after The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced plans to introduce a new award for the best “popular” film at the Oscars, they’ve backtracked.

Officials from the group met this week to discuss the massive backlash over the announcement—which was seen as a way to recognize blockbusters like superhero movies in their own category—and decided that it will not be a part of the awards show in February.

They haven’t killed the idea altogether but said they “will examine and seek additional input regarding the new category” for future shows.

Academy CEO Dawn Hudson told The Hollywood Reporter, “There has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award, and we recognize the need for further discussion with our members. We have made changes to the Oscars over the years—including this year—and we will continue to evolve while also respecting the incredible legacy of the last 90 years.”

Black Panther, the best picture award you rightfully deserve is yours for the taking.
