Sure, summer is in full swing, and there are plenty of reasons to get outside and enjoy some fun in the sun.
But … Netflix is about to add a ton of great new shows and movies starting on July 1, so we won’t judge you if you just close the curtains and choose binge-watching over the beach.
Here’s a look at 10 new movies and shows coming to Netflix next month that you need to see.
Best in Show
Christopher Guest’s painfully awkward mockumentary examining the world of high-end dog shows is one of the weirdest and funniest movies Guest and his team of improv comedians and actors have ever produced. Watch and cringe.
Chasing Coral
The gorgeously shot documentary looks at an underreported environmental catastrophe, and how we can help.
E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
Watch the movie that made Steven Spielberg into one of the most influential filmmakers in history, and be reminded of how great stories can stand the test of time.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Rogue One is coming to Netflix. What a time to be alive.
iZombie
iZombie is a criminally underwatched CW gem about a zombie named Liv who temporarily inherits the memories and personality traits of anyone she eats. She puts all this to good use by getting a job at the morgue and taking a bite out of murder victims to get some clues as to how they died.
Sure, it’s a weird premise, but it’s anchored by an exquisite performance from Rose McIver and features some strong, imaginative writing.
Castlevania
Netflix’s adaptation of the classic video game franchise is getting a lot of buzz. And, if this early look is any indication, it will be a visual spectacle.
The Mighty Ducks
Look, we’re going to be honest. The Mighty Ducks does not hold up as a “good” movie, but if you are looking for the ultimate piece of early ‘90s sports nostalgia, there is no one better to deliver it than Emilio Estevez and his ragtag team of hockey cast-offs.
Lion
Lion tells the story of a man looking for the family he was separated from as a child, after growing up in an adopted family in a different culture. It’s a powerful journey exploring the bonds of family, the pull of home and the importance of self discovery. Warning: You will definitely cry.
Matchstick Men
Sure, Nic Cage has made some truly terrible movies, but Matchstick Men manages to capture his manic energy and use it to create a deeply entertaining mystery drama with surprising twists and an unexpected emotional punch.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
The film manages to do something pretty extraordinary: examine the devastation of the Holocaust through the eyes of children—and with the humanity that only their innocence can capture.
