Welcome to the brand spankin’ new Movies Section at RELEVANTmagazine.com! My name is Matt Wiggins, and I’ll be your host here for the foreseeable future. You have no idea how excited I am to be here or all the reasons for it. We are coming up with a ton of new features for this little corner of the site that will hopefully make it indispensable to you before long. Not only are we going to be talking about what’s in theaters, we plan on adding content to let you know what’s coming out on DVD and what’s worth watching on TV. We’ll be bringing you the finest reviews to let you know what’s worth watching, and we’ll even throw in reaction pieces to give you a little bit more to think about afterward.
The other reason I’m so excited is that, plain and simple, I love movies. Movies are the culmination of the arts. Yeah, that’s a bold statement to make, and I’m sure that some people are going to disagree, but think about this: Movies have incorporated elements of each of the major art forms. From photography and painting we get mise-en-scene and framing; from music we get soundtracks and scores; from literature we get narrative and dialogue; from theater we get acting; from dance we get choreography, from elaborate dance sequences to swordfighting. Add all those elements together (plus the one unique to film: cinematography) and voila, the culmination of the arts. Even if that does not convince you, there’s no denying that film is the dominant art form of the 20th century and thus far into the 21st. Each of the art forms has had its day, but now it’s cinema’s turn. And I can’t think of a better time to be a part of it.
