7 Movies Coming to Netflix in December That You Need to See

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: Advent is in full swing, Christmas is coming, we’ll all be gathering regularly with family and friends.

And also there’s a bunch of new movies, shows and documentaries on Netflix. There’s a lot there, so we tried to narrow the list for you. Here are seven movies (and shows) now on Netflix we think you should know about:

White Rabbit Project (season 1)

When Mythbusters ended after a fascinating 13-year run, we feared the science-y, curious parts of our TV consumption might just end, too. But in White Rabbit Project some of the old Mythbusters gang is back. Scientists Kari Byron, Tory Belleci and Grant Imahara—all three of whom regularly appeared on the original show—investigate and attempt to explain weird, seemingly unexplainable “events from pop culture, science and history.”

We’re pretty excited about it.

This Netflix original biopic takes a look at the early adult life of President Barack Obama, particularly his time at Columbia University during the early 1980s. Australian actor Devon Terrell’s portrayal of Obama is receiving a lot of critical praise.

Chill With Bob Ross (1990)

OK, so “chill” in the title of this three-episode collection is supposedly a reference to the temperature—because in each, the iconic artist teaches viewers how to paint wintery scenes. It’s a double entendre, of course, because nothing is more chill than watching America’s favorite TV painter do his thing.

Somehow, there’s no trailer for Chill With Bob Ross, so here’s an entire episode:

Breaking a Monster

You’ve likely heard of the metal band Unlocking the Truth. They’ve gotten a decent amount of national attention during the last couple of years—not directly because of their music, but because the members are 12 and 13 years old.

Breaking a Monster is critically acclaimed—as in, a near impossible 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes—follows the highly unlikely journey of members Alec Atkins, Malcolm Brickhouse and Jarad Dawkins as they go from kids being kids to kids being legitimate rock stars.

Edward Snowden started something. And whatever you think of his actions, Americans now have to deal with the information he brought to light. At the forefront of that battle is the internet and who is allowed to do what with it.

Killswitch is a fast-paced documentary that takes a deep look at internet censorship, hacktivism, free speech and the idea of democracy in a digital age.

D2: The Mighty Ducks

Remember 1994? Of course you don’t. But thankfully Netflix is giving us a little piece of ‘90s nostalgia to help close out the year. Let this sequel to the iconic hockey movie take you back:

Captain America: Civil War (2016)

This year was the year superheroes clashed because new movies make new money. And while at least one attempt (which may or may not be called Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice) was just the worst. The infighting of the Avengers was a critical surprise, even earning a 90 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. If you’re like half the world, you already saw Captain America: Civil War in theaters. But whether you’ve seen it or not, it’s worth some of your Netflix attention.

(This one doesn’t go online until later this month.)
