Director Dee Rees’ follow-up to her dazzling Mudbound is here, and it stars Anne Hathaway, Ben Affleck and Willem Dafoe in an adaptation of Joan Didion’s political espionage thriller The Last Thing He Ever Wanted, which is set against the backdrop of President Ronald Reagan’s Iran-Contra scandal.
The novel follows the story of a DC journalist who goes from covering a story to becoming a part of it when her dad gets her caught up in an arms deal gone bad.
It’s an interesting story, all the more so since the Iran-Contra scandal has largely disappeared down the national memory hole over the last few years. It’ll debut on Netflix on February 21.
