Another Day, Another Report on How Much Facebook is Watching Us

At this point, nobody’s surprised by news that Facebook is getting all up into our personal business. It’s Facebook. Do you really expect Facebook to stop getting into your personal business? Do you expect the sun to stop shining? Please. The latest report is that Facebook monitors chats for potentially illegal activity. Most of it is automated—the software looks for conversations between, say, people with no previously established connection and have a suspicious age gap between, and then flags those talks as a potential chat between would-be sex offenders and their potential victims. Of course, Facebook is keeping mum on where exactly the transcripts of these talks are stored and what they do with the ones that turn out to be harmless.
