In remote parts of the world, impoverished communities often don’t have access to eye doctors with the sophisticated equipment needed to diagnose vision problems. But the makers of a new digital examination kit and app called Peek want to change. Because 80 percent of blindness is preventable, and 90 percent of those living with visual impairment live in low-income countries, the new techonology can literally help the blind see again. The smartphone app kit, which offers a cheap, portable solution to treating eye problems, uses a special add-on camera that can be used to examine a patient’s eye.
