Prince’s estate has been a bit cagey with the rights to the artist’s life and work after his death, but news dropped Monday night that shows they’re entrusting the man’s legacy to someone they can trust: Ava DuVernay. The producer/director will helm a multi-part documentary for the streaming platform covering the artists’s entire life.
DeVernay told Deadline: “Prince was a genius and a joy and a jolt to the senses. The only way I know how to make this film is with love and with great care. I’m honored todo so and grateful for the opportunity entrusts to me.”
DuVernay is one of the most renowned, and prolific, directors working today. Her work on Selma and 13th in particular were celebrated, and her direction was acclaimed in this year’s A Wrinkle In Time despite the rest of the movie coming up a bit short. Right now she’s leading a few more anticipated projects, including a miniseries on the Central Park Five.
DuVernay had her first big break in the documentary world. Her first feature film was a documentary on the 1990s hip hop scene called This Is the Life, which premiered in 2008. (h/t Deadline)
