There aren’t that many songs out there about a man killing his girlfriend, thank goodness. But one such song—perhaps the most famous one—is Jimmy Hendrix’s “Hey Joe,” which chronicles one man’s murderous rage over catching his girlfriend “messing around with another man.” So, the odds that “Hey Joe” would queue up on the BBC immediately following an update on Oscar Pistorius’ murder trial are pretty slim. And yet, a BBC spokesman was forced to write a statement saying, “In light of the nature of the news story, we apologise for any offence caused by the proximity of the song ‘Hey Joe’ to the bulletin. An on-air apology was made immediately the mistake was realised.” Pistorius has, of course, been charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, and some reports suggest the killing may have been owing to his outrage over a text she received from an ex-boyfriend.
