‘Black Panther’ Has Fifth-Largest Opening Weekend of All Time

With a $192 million haul and a $175 million gap between it and its nearest competitor, Black Panther dominated the weekend box office and delivered Disney and Marvel one of the largest opening weekends ever. The earnings also make for the best opening ever for the month of February and the best President’s Day weekend box-office performance ever. Pretty, pretty good.

Disney now has eight of the top 10 domestic openings ever, with Star Wars and Avengers movies crowding the top spots. Black Panther is the second-largest opening ever for the MCU, behind only The Avengers. It edged Avengers: Age of Ultron by a cool $1 million.

People are loving Black Panther, too, so projections for follow-up weekends are optimistic. The movie has an “A+” rating on audience-survey site CinemaScore. (h/t Box Office Mojo)
