This morning, Ellen Degeneres debuted the trailer for the upcoming romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians on her talk show. The movie, based on the bestselling 2013 novel by Kevin Kwan, is the first non-period movie in over two decades with a majority Asian American cast.
Crazy Rich Asians follows a Chinese-American economics professor named Rachel who goes with her boyfriend back to his home country of Singapore to meet his family, only to find that they are one of the richest families in the country. The movie’s stars include Constance Wu as Rachel, Awkwafina as Rachel’s best friend Paik Lin and Henry Golding as Rachel’s boyfriend, Nick Young.
The casting means this will be the first time many of the cast members won’t be playing “token Asians” in a movie. As Awkwafina previously told HuffPost. “I realized we, at one point in our lives, were the one Asian in the movie, and that was profound. We’re not all ‘Asia Asians.’ There was something beautiful about all these actors being in Singapore, doing a movie that is going to be so big for our people.”
