This profile of a Hunger Games-themed children’s camp in Florida is terrifying. The children’s camp is an attempt to capitalize on the popular book and movie series about a good ‘ole fashioned, summertime fun-in-the-sun, post-apocalyptic death-match. From the article:
The summer camp director remembered plenty of debate when the camp first had the idea to do a Hunger Games-themed week. But he felt they could cut out the violence. The kids would pull flag belts from each other’s waists … Susan Toler, a clinical psychologist specializing in children’s issues and an assistant dean at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, called the camp idea “unthinkable.”
So there is a minor debate about the potential psychological harm of reenacting a death-match, at least arts-and-craft time seems wholesome. Instead of boring, nature-themed cabin decorations, Hunger Games campers adorn the campground with fun, homemade artwork. (Again, from the article): “The girls were decorating posters for the Games. ‘LOSING MEANS CERTAIN DEATH.’” Sounds like a real hoot …
