Elle Fanning steps into the true crime genre as Michelle Carter in The Girl From Plainville.
Fanning is nearly unrecognizable in the trailer, with much darker, thicker eyebrows and honey-blond hair. The teaser begins with Fanning as Carter tearfully telling her parents that her boyfriend, Conrad Roy (Colton Ryan) is dead before the screen shows dozens of text messages she sent encouraging Roy to take his own life. The teaser goes on to show the viral trial and Carter dodging paparazzi.
The series is based on the real-life “suicide texting case” involving Carter and her late boyfriend Conrad Roy. Back in 2017, Carter was convicted and found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the “texting suicide” case, for her role in encouraging Roy to take his own life. Carter was 17 and Roy was 18 at the time of the death. Carter was initially sentenced to two and a half years in prison, although the sentence was later reduced to 15 months and she was released three months early due to good behavior.
Hulu’s take on the story is the latest in a long line of media outlets to cover the unbelievable case. Carter’s motivation for sending the messages is the biggest mystery surrounding the case. Some hypothesized while she did it, while others left it open to interpretation. You can watch Hulu’s version of events unfold on March 29.
