When future humanities scholars look back at the year 2013, they will see it was the year the art of literature died a horrible, slow death. Forbes magazine has released its list of the top-earning authors in the world, and E.L. James, author of the explicit Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy takes the top spot. The author of the series that started as self-published fan fiction has earned $95 million in the last 12 months. Let that sink in. Crime author James Patterson came in a close second, with $91 million in earnings. The rest of the top five is rounded out by Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins ($55 million), Bill O’Reilly ($28 million) and Danielle Steel ($28 million).
