Anthony Mackie Got Pretty Emotional While Talking to Jimmy Fallon About the History of Civil Rights

On Thursday, Anthony Mackie joined The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to talk about his new initiative I Am a Man, which encourages Americans to get out there and vote. In doing so, he talked about the difficulties of being a black dad raising two sons in the current social unrest and got choked up discussing the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“It blew my mind,” said the Avengers actor of standing on the balcony where King was shot. “To think that this man worked so hard and gave his life and here we are, 55 years later, dealing with the exact same thing. That’s what hurts.”

Mackie talks about the sacrifices that his grandfather and father made so that he could become a “stupid actor,” and expresses concern over current elected lawmakers’ ability to deal with the concerns facing the country.

Mackie’s new initiative is called I Am a Man, and the goal is to get a million men registered to vote before the election in November. Next up for Mackie is Falcon and the Winter Soldier, a Disney+ show that will chronicle the further adventures of Mackie’s Sam Wilson in taking on the shield and becoming the new Captain America.
