Honestly, given the current caliber of Spider-Man movies coming from studios, they can keep shoveling these movies out at maximum capacity and nobody is likely to complain. Last month’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse might just be the best spider-flick yet, but the Sony/Marvel Studios live-action collaboration has a secret weapon in Tom Holland.  Holland’s one of the most likable people on the planet, and seeing him return to the spandex that made him a star will always be a treat.

This movie is playing nebulous with the timeline, so it’s a little tough to figure out how it all fits into the events of last year’s Avengers: Infinity War, but given everything else going on here, who cares? Nick Fury’s back! Aunt May and Happy Hogan are an item! Tortured teen love! Jake Gyllenhaal as evil comic book baddie Mysterio, who looks like “Iron Man and Thor rolled into one,” as one of Peter’s friends notes.

Hey, fun trivia. Back in the days when Tobey Maguire was the one wearing the spider-suit, Maguire suffered an onset injury while filming Spider-Man 2 and wasn’t sure whether he’d be able to make it back to set. Sony was getting nervous and decided to line up a replacement in case Maguire walked for good, and they decided on Jake Gyllenhaal, of all people.

Word is, the studio even got as far as fitting Gyllenhaal for the suit, but Maguire decided to power through his injury and Gyllenhaal avoided getting caught up in a Spider-movie until now.

Just goes to show, you die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
