The Trailer for ‘When They See Us’ Promises a Harrowing Story About the Central Park 5

Ava DuVernay’s next, hugely anticipated feature is a Netflix original miniseries called When They See Us, that will explore the true story of the Central Park Five — the five Harlem teenagers who were wrongfully arrested for the rape of Trisha Meili in 1989.

Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise were exonerated in 2014 and were paid a settlement by New York City. Their story came back to prominence after a 1989 full-page ad resurfaced calling for their execution in NYC’s four major newspapers. That ad was written by now-President Donald Trump. He has since refused to acknowledge their innocence.

The movie stars Michael K. Williams, Felicity Huffman and Vera Farmiga. Jovan Adepo, Justin Cunningham, Chris Chalk, Freddy Miyares and Jharrel Jerome play the Central Park Five.

The series releases on Netflix May 31.
