‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ and ‘Birdman’ Lead This Year’s Oscar Nominees

There is a lot to say about this year’s Oscar nominees, and it can’t all be said here. First thing’s first, Selma director Ava DuVernay’s snub is one of the biggest Oscar misses in recent memory. She was considered all but a shoe-in to be the first black woman nominated for Best Director, but she didn’t make the cut. Related: for the second time in 20 years, every single actor nominated for an Oscar is white. Also baffling: The LEGO Movie was somehow not nominated for best animated feature? Oh, Hollywood. So eager to be seen as progressive and forward thinking. So reluctant to actually be so.

The movies that did get nominated are not a huge surprise. As expected, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Birdman lead the way with the most nominations. Those two, American Sniper, Boyhood, The Imitation Game, Selma, The Theory of Everything and Whiplash round out the Best Picture nominees. Michael Keaton, Eddie Redmayne, Benedict Cumberbatch, Steve Carell and Bradley Cooper were nominated for Best Actor. Marion Cotillard, Felicity Jones, Julianne Moore, Rosamund Pike and Reese Witherspoon will battle it out for Best Actress. You can read a full list of the nominees here
