Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’ Will Apparently Be a ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll’ Take

Brace yourselves, Narnia fans — Greta Gerwig’s long-awaited Chronicles of Narnia adaptations for Netflix might turn out a little different than you think.

In a recent interview with Deadline, producer Amy Pascal confirmed that the first of Gerwig’s Narnia films will begin filming in July 2025. Pascal also revealed the adaptations will have a “very new take” and will be “all about rock ‘n roll,” which has left some fans scratching their heads as to what exactly that means.

However, Gerwig once compared the Barbie plotline to Adam and Eve, so we’re just going to let this slide for now. It also helps that Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has previously described Gerwig’s vision as “rooted in faith” and “bigger and bolder” than what audiences might expect.

But Pascal wasn’t the only one to drop some hints about the upcoming adaptation. Actor Jason Isaacs may have unintentionally leaked the news that the first of Gerwig’s two adaptations would be The Magician’s Nephew. During an interview with The Week, he mentioned The Magician’s Nephew as one of his favorite books and expressed excitement about Gerwig’s upcoming films.

“I loved all the Narnia books as a kid,” he said. “When Peter was told he wouldn’t be coming back, I understood something devastating about mortality. I picked [The Magician’s Nephew] because Greta Gerwig is about to make a film of it, which I can’t wait to see.”

Gerwig hasn’t confirmed which script she’s working on, but she has shared her excitement for bringing Lewis’ world to life with a new spin.

“As a child, you accept the whole thing — that you’re in this land of Narnia, there’s fauns, and then Father Christmas shows up,” she said. “It doesn’t even occur to you that it’s not schematic. I’m interested in embracing the paradox of the worlds that Lewis created, because that’s what’s so compelling about them.”
