Fashion chain Urban Outfitters—whose target customer is under 30—now sells more vinyl records than any other retail outlet on the planet. During a recent industry meeting, UO’s chief administrative officer said, “Music is very, very important to the Urban customer … in fact, we are the world’s number one vinyl seller.” The demand has gotten so big that Urban Outfitters now works directly with vendors so they can easily sell records online without having to keep them in stock. The surge in vinyl record popularity is continuing to grow—Nielsen SoundScan says that this year could be the biggest-selling year for vinyl records since 1991.
