When Jon Stewart announced he was leaving The Daily Show, we—like many others—suggested that Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams would be a great fit for the job. Shortly thereafter, Williams shot down any speculation over Twitter, saying she was “extremely under-qualified for the job.” That would have been the end of it, but for an opinion piece in The Billfold, suggesting Williams was selling herself short and misjudging her own potential. It was undoubtedly well-intentioned, but poorly worded and, according to Williams herself, “incredibly insulting.” She took to Twitter to address the piece in what ended up being a very powerful and moving declaration of her own vision for her career, in which she explained the difference between having low standards for yourself and having a unique standard for yourself.
