Hollywood is overrun with unnecessary sequels and even more unnecessary remakes these days. “Where are the original screenplays?!” asks film junkies. Well, ask and ye shall receive.
Deadline has shared that Play-Doh — yes, as in the clay-like kids compound that was an essential part of your childhood — is taking over the big screen, with some big, arguably over-qualified names already attached to it. The Big Sick‘s Emily V. Gordon will write the screenplay and Crazy Rich Asians‘ Jon M. Chu is set to produce.
Gordon and Chu seem to be very excited about this new film. We don’t know much about it yet (Will it be claymation, but play-do-mation?), but it appears they have an emotional storyline ready to tug on audience’s heartstrings.
I am so psyched that I get to work with the incredible @emilyvgordon on this project!!! Been a huge fan for years. How lucky am I?! It’s a special one. We’ve had countless tearful conversations of how powerful play is to find your place in the world. https://t.co/qGkIkJWhQW

The film is the latest from eOne and Hasbro, who are looking to capitalize on millennial nostalgia by introducing iconic characters and toys to the next generation. In addition to the new ‘Play-Doh’ movie, eONe is developing myriad films and TV shows about Dungeons and Dragons, Power Rangers, Risk, Clue, Mouse Trap and more.
