This weekend, pop star Justin Bieber shared a devotional passage with his 56 million Instagram followers. Alongside the caption “Happy Saturday,” Bieber posted an image of a page from Sarah Young’s best-selling daily devotional Jesus Calling, which calls readers to “Worship me only. Whatever occupies your mind becomes your god … Guard your thoughts diligently; good thought-choices will keep you close to Me.” (You can read the whole passage here.)
In the past year, Bieber—who has at times in his career been known more for tabloid appearances than his music—has discussed rediscovering faith, proclaimed his admiration for Bethel Music, brought a pastor on stage at a concert and has been open about his struggles with parts of Christian culture, that he says, leave “a bad taste in people’s mouths” by being “overly churchy and religious.” He told Complex, “I just wanna honestly live like Jesus. Not be Jesus—I could never—I don’t want that to come across weird. He created a pretty awesome template of how to love people and how to be gracious and kind.”
