The newly engaged Kanye West took time for an exceptionally rare radio talk show interview this morning where he opened up about his decision to feature a surprisingly theologically astute Jesus character on his profanity-laden Yeezus tour. And his interview was probably most notable for how low-key and normal it was, including this soundbite about Christianity. When asked if people might take his portrayal of Jesus wrong, Kanye offered this thought.

I had a friend of mine that’s a pastor that was there when we started discussing how we wanted to deliver it. Now, my girl [Kim Kardashian] even asked afterward, ‘Hmmm, is it weird if Jesus comes on stage?’ And then [The pastor said], ‘No, we do plays all the time [where] people play Jesus.’ You know what’s awesome about Christianity is that we’re allowed to portray God. We’re allowed to draw [an] image of him, we’re allowed to make movies about him. Other religions, you’re not allowed to. That’s what’s awesome about Christianity—well, that’s one of the things that’s awesome about Christianity.

When the host agrees by noting that Madonna had used Jesus in her concerts (possibly referring to her infamous nun striptease on MTV), Kanye replies much more appropriately: “Michelangelo did it.” All told, it’s yet another reminder (as if we needed one) that this man is not nearly as easy to pin down as anyone wants him to be …
