As you may have seen, R. Kelly is back in the news. He’s got a new album out, headlined a lot of summer festivals and collaborated with Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. The 46-year-old’s return to some level of cultural prominence has happened despite the many, many accusations of rape leveled against him—accusations that are now either spun as “rumors” (they were not rumors) or completely ignored. Back in 2000, Chicago Sun-Times music critic Jim DeRogatis reported on these accusations, and he’s been following R. Kelly’s career ever since.
