Lifetime Is Making a Miniseries Based on the Old Testament-Themed Novel ‘The Red Tent’

Another Bible drama is headed to primetime. Lifetime is producing a four-hour miniseries adaptation of the novel The Red Tent, a book featuring Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah. The best-selling 1997 novel was somewhat controversial after it was released, as some religious critics disagreed with the liberties taken with the Biblical account.

As The Christian Post notes, author Anita Diamant defended her narrative decisions, saying, “The Red Tent is not a translation but a work of fiction. Its perspective and focus—by and about the female characters—distinguishes it from the biblical account, in which women are usually peripheral and often totally silent. By giving Dinah a voice and by providing texture and content to the sketchy biblical descriptions, my book is a radical departure from the historical text.” The miniseries joins a host of new series slated for release in the fall, including a series about the life of Christ as a child on Fox and a miniseries about the early church on NBC …
