If you believe Mel Gibson, the much-talked-about sequel to The Passion of the Christ will finally begin filming next year.
Over 20 years after the original Passion of the Christ hit theaters, director Gibson and star Jim Cavezial — now 55 years old — will return for the sequel. The two have been talking about the film for years in various interviews, dropping hints about the plot, which Cavezial describes as “one of the best things you’ve ever seen.” (We’ll see.)
A new article from Italpress detailed that Gibson is currently in Malta, speaking with Maltese officials about using the island nation as a filming location for The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection in 2025.
From what we’ve pieced together from Gibson and Cavezial’s interviews, Resurrection will pick up 24 hours after Jesus’ death, covering the three days between his crucifixion and resurrection. It cannot be emphasized enough that this means the sequel will be 90% Gibson’s interpretation/imagination of these events, and 10% biblical accuracy.
The sequel to the 2004 blockbuster hit has been rumored for well over a decade at this point. The original film made $612 million and is one of the most successful R-rated films of all time, a title they held until this summer when Deadpool and Wolverine took the top spot.
