This week, Disney announced it would create a prequel series starring Diego Luna’s character from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Luna’s character, Cassian Andor, was a spy for the rebellion. The series will follow his early days in the fight against the Empire, before he joined the plot to steal the Death Star plans.
The news comes concurrent with Disney’s announcement that their upcoming streaming service, named Disney+, will launch next year with full details coming April. (h/t Hollywood Reporter)
Diego Luna was one of the breakouts of Rogue One’s ensemble cast. His spy character showed a lot of promise early in the film, but was lost a bit during the mud of the middle act. Star Wars fans should be encouraged by this news: This series will at least be an original property in the spirit of the books and comics that have supplemented the original movies since their release decades ago. No more hacky Solo spin-offs.
No further detail on the series yet, but this Star Wars series is the second confirmed for Disney. The Mandalorian, from director Jon Favreau, was the first Star Wars show Disney announced for Disney+ earlier this year.
