At Coachella last weekend, Weezer casually mentioned the band was working on a new film, without offering up any specific details.
But with cast rumors swirling, frontman Rivers Cuomo confirmed today that at least one name is real: Jack Black. Cuomo announced the news by posting an AI-generated movie poster featuring Black in the band’s fan Discord with the caption, “Nope, it’s real.”
Weezer and Black go way back—like 2001 Tenacious D tour back—so his involvement feels more like destiny than surprise.
As for the movie itself? Still mostly under wraps. But according to film insider Jeff Sneider, it’s a mockumentary in the spirit of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story—which is a polite way of saying it’s going to be gloriously unhinged.
Oh, and Keanu Reeves is reportedly playing the villain.
The rest of the rumored cast includes Eric Andre, Johnny Knoxville, Juliette Lewis and Ben Schwartz—who already filmed a scene at a Weezer concert last year. At the Los Angeles show, Schwartz appeared onstage to stage a mock fight with the band and asked the crowd to help film “a big fight where Weezer is fighting these big villains,” before pretending to get beat up as the audience cheered.
So yeah, whatever this movie is, it’s clearly not following the rules, but it is shaping up to be a fever dream of pop-punk nostalgia, surrealist comedy and whatever Jack Black is doing at any given moment.
No release date has been announced yet, but if this movie is even half as unhinged as it’s shaping up to be, we’re in.
