The first trailer for The Testament of Ann Lee is here, offering a haunting glimpse into one of the most fascinating chapters of American faith.
Amanda Seyfried stars as Ann Lee, the 18th-century founder of the Shaker movement — a radical sect of Christianity that embraced simplicity, celibacy and worship through music and dance. The Shakers believed Lee was the female embodiment of Christ, a claim that made her both revered and condemned.
Directed by Mona Fastvold (The World to Come), the film reimagines Lee’s rise from English factory worker to spiritual leader of a utopian community, with more than a dozen original Shaker hymns woven through the story. The cast includes Lewis Pullman, Thomasin McKenzie, Christopher Abbott and Tim Blake Nelson.
Visually rich and emotionally restrained, The Testament of Ann Lee looks like an introspective exploration of faith, power and devotion — the kind of historical drama that lingers long after the credits roll.
The film opens in limited release on December 25.
