One of the more surreal moments from Thursday’s enormous Disney Investor call was the announcement from Pixar that a new Buzz Lightyear movie is in the works. But, stick with us here, this will not be the Buzz Lightyear we’ve come to know over four Toy Story movies. It turns out that Buzz Lightyear, the toy, is based on a scifi movie franchise within the Toy Story universe. That movie, Lightyear, is coming to our real world to be its own franchise, separate from the Toy Story movies. Make sense?
Well, presumably, it will in time. Chris Evans has signed on to voice the lead in Lightyear, and as he explained in one of the weirder tweets of 2020: “This isn’t Buzz Lightyear the toy. This is the origin story of the human Buzz Lightyear that the toy is based on.”
And just to be clear, this isn’t Buzz Lightyear the toy. This is the origin story of the human Buzz Lightyear that the toy is based on

Well, OK! Pixar’s earned the right to play a little fast and loose with the rules, and signing Captain America up to play another American icon is a coup any way you slice it. Here’s Pixar head honcho Pete Docter on the idea behind the movie, including a brief image of what this young, non-toy Buzz Lightyear will look like.
