Do you like movies about people fighting aliens? What about movies about time travel? Well, good news, because Amazon has taken your two favorite things and mashed them up into one with Tomorrow War, in which Chris Pratt must travel to the future to fight aliens. Seems like just the sort of gonzo, goofy scifi premise that works for Pratt’s sensibilities, which makes the seriousness of this trailer a little odd. Hey, you’re fighting future aliens, guys. Lighten up a little!
Pratt apparently plays a high school teacher who gets roped into working with a team of time travelers in the year 2051 to take on a species of alien threatening all life on earth. His dad J.K. Simmons comes along for the ride, as does a brilliant scientist (is there any other kind?) played by Yvonne Strahovski. Amazon Studios is distributing the movie to the tune of a reported $200 million, so they clearly believe in the project.
Maybe the trailer is giving us the wrong impression. After all, this movie is directed by Chris McKay, who gave us the very funny LEGO Batman Movie and also stars gifted comic actors like J.K Simmons, Edwin Hodge, Sam Richardson, Betty Gilpin, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Jasmine Mathews and Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Hopefully, this action movie will utilize its cast’s full potential.
