Chris Pratt to Add ‘Garfield’ to His Precariously Long Resume

Well, Chris Pratt is going to voice Garfield. Let’s just get that out of the way. We had no sooner started to wrap our heads around the fact that Pratt is voicing Mario then we get this bomb dropped on us. What a world.

It’s not a terrible idea. Pratt was a revelation in The LEGO Movie, where his vocal talents alternated between hilarity and genuine emotion with a lot of dexterity, so it’s no surprise other cartoon ventures are knocking at his door now. Taking on not one but two major pieces of intellectual property seems like a lot though. Other actors need work too. If Pratt got raptured tomorrow, half the projects in Hollywood would grind to a halt. Surely Beck Bennett or Jonah Hill or Nick Offerman or somebody could have handled Garfield duties while Pratt takes on the Mushroom Kingdom crew but, well, this movie wants what it wants.

And whatever your feelings on Pratt, there’s reason to think the movie might deliver. Finding Nemo writer David Reynolds is handing scripting duties while Mark Dindall (Chicken Little) is directing. This is the same creative powerhouse who brought us The Emperor’s New Groove so, you know, this movie could end up being alright.
