Fear is the mind-killer and Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin are prepared to face it. And now, with the first trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s hotly anticipated Dune adaptation, we’ve got a look at just what the latest iteration of the battle for the fate of Arrakis will look like. The all-star cast is certainly a draw but Villeneuve is a real secret weapon here, having churned out back-to-back modern scifi masterpieces with Arrival and Blade Runner 2049.
Frank Herbert’s novel is a classic read but has proven difficult to adapt, foiling the best efforts of David Lynch in the 80s. The laser battles and giant sandworms are an obvious draw, but the slippery politics and class commentary resist simplistic narrative. Can Villeneuve triumph where others have stumbled? Stay tuned, but this trailer promises that whatever else happens, it’ll at least be gorgeous to look at.
