Holy smokes. Disney Studios is making its return to movies in a big way with Raya and the Last Dragon, which follows some sort of ninja warrior princess (Kelly Marie Tran) on an intrepid quest through a fantastical country to find and protect the “last dragon” (Awkwafina) and the animation is astonishing. It’s always fun when the creative brains at Disney get a chance to really show off, and that’s what the kingdom of Kumandra appears set to do. We’ve got shape-shifting dragons, daring fight scenes, a baby grifter and Tuk Tuk, some sort of giant armadillo creature voiced by Alan Tudyk. Also in the voice cast: Gemma Chan, Daniel Dae Kim, Benedict Wong and Sandra Oh. All in all, sounds like a pretty great time at the movies.
Speaking of which, it looks like this one will head to theaters on March 5 after several pandemic-related delays and will also drop on Disney Plus with some “premiere access” qualifiers — meaning subscribers will probably have to pay extra for it like they did with Mulan last year.
