The Little Mermaid. The Rings of Power. Star Wars. Any number of MCU movies. Yes, every time a casting director decides to unleash a little bit of racial diversity into the mix of their movies, you can be sure a huge online army of social media users (or, at least, an small online club with an army of social media accounts) will be there, telling companies that to “go woke is to go broke.”
We’ve been over this many times. No matter how much these people try to dress up their “concern” for these movies with ideas like “scientifically, mermaids wouldn’t be Black,” it’s hard to get around the notion that what they really want is for franchises they like to stay the way they remember them, and that way is White. Curiously, you don’t hear them get to upset the casting decision goes the other way.
Here are five times casting RUINED the movie.
Son of God
Hmmm, we’re all for depictions of Jesus on screen, but why did this one have to change Jesus to a white guy?
The Passion of the Christ
The Passion of the Christ did big box office numbers when it hit, but it completely missed by …well, it looks like this one also cast Jesus as a white guy.
Last Days in the Desert
Last Days in the Desert was a 2015 movie that told the story of Jesus in the wilderness and it, uh, well, OK. It cast Jesus as a white guy too?
The Last Temptation of Christ
OK, this is starting to get weird.
Mary Magdalene
Alright, well, we could do this all day. In any case, no doubt the people who are upset about changing the race of a pretend mermaid for children were also incredibly upset about changing the race of not only a real life person, but the most consequential person who’s ever lived.
