A Minecraft Movie is currently No. 1 at the box office and has already broken multiple records in its first five days of release. But what’s happening in theaters might be even more surprising than what’s happening on screen.
Viral videos show audiences losing their minds—throwing popcorn, jumping from their seats and screaming with excitement—all because a zombie baby riding a chicken makes an appearance. The now-infamous “chicken jockey” scene has gained a rowdy following, mostly made up of teenage boys.
The internet might love the enthusiasm, but theater owners? Not so much. Several theaters have brought in police to remove unruly viewers. One theater in New Jersey has gone so far as to ban unaccompanied minors and groups of boys entirely.
Like it or not, the chaos is working. The movie pulled in $163 million on opening weekend, making it the highest-grossing debut for a video game adaptation ever. If you plan on seeing it for yourself, bring snacks, a sense of humor—and maybe a helmet.
