Joaquin Phoenix’s Weird-Looking ‘Joker’ Movie Might Be Good After All

Well, nobody really needed another take on the Joker but we’re getting one anyway, courtesy of The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix. And while another trip to Gotham City to explore the twisted mind of Batman’s biggest bad guy might seem a little unnecessary at this point, the new trailer does make the case that this one will be at least different. Phoenix, at least, is acting his heart out.

Whoa. Twisted!

On the one hand, a movie about a sad white guy driven to domestic terrorism by what he perceives as undeserved sleights from society feels both eerily relevant and also maybe not the sort of narrative we want to promote in 2019. On the other, it’s possible this movie could have some fresh insights into just how someone’s worldview can get bent into something dangerous and violent.

In any case, Phoenix looks like he’s channeling quite a performance, and Robert DeNiro, Zazie Beetz and Marc Maron are all welcome presences in any movie. We’ll know more in October when this drops just a few weeks after the other evil clown movie headed to theaters.
