Non-Fungible Tolkien: Warner Bros Will Release ‘Fellowship of the Ring’ as an NFT

Warner Bros. Discovery continues to plumb new depths in baffling business decisions, having now announced a plan to release The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring as a set of NFTs, the first step in a planned “WB Movieverse.” Warner Bros. made this announcement in a press release, which says tha …you know what, never mind. The language is of crypto, which we will not utter here.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Extended Version) Web3 Movie Experience” is the full name of this thing, which is somehow even longer than the movie itself. Unlike the movie, nothing about it sounds very worthwhile. Peter Jackson’s 2001 movie will apparently now live on Eluvio’s Content Blockchain, and while the full movie is already available to purchase as digital media, Warner Bros and Eluvio leadership are hoping to sweeten the NFT pot with a few special features. Buyers will acquire one of three interactive navigation menus, image galleries and other bonus content.

The idea is that, down the road, fans can buy, sell and trade their NFT movie content in the metaverse among themselves. Maybe so. But so far, all of this sounds an awful lot like the DVD main menus of yesteryear. Guess we’ll know more when the “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Extended Version) Web3 Movie Experience” actually launches on October 21.
