OK, What Accent Is Harry Styles Going For in the First ‘Don’t Worry, Darling’ Clip?

On Wednesday, Warner Bros released the first clip of its hotly anticipated Don’t Worry Darling, Olivia Wilde’s upcoming twisty thriller starring Florence Pugh as a woman trapped in a world where Harry Styles is her husband. That may not sound so bad, but it seems Pugh’s character isn’t thrilled with the artifice she starts to suspect and confronts Harry about it, leading to our first clip from the movie.

The confrontation doesn’t go great and Pugh seems to still think something is amiss. Hey, maybe it has to do with Styles’ globetrotting accent?

Hmmm. Styles takes on a little trip across the island here, his big monologue a veritable Epcot Center of the English language. It’s not entirely clear whether he’s trying to bury his natural accent, go for a different accent or maybe just talks like that?

Pugh, one of the better actors of her generation, rolls with it. Or, for all we know, is reacting honestly to her confusion about her co-star’s chameleon-like dialect. She does more acting in one furious stare than Styles does in the whole clip.

None of this is to stay Don’t Worry Darling won’t be a treat. Director Olivia Wilde really delivered on her directorial debut Booksmart and she’s assembled a great cast around this one that in addition to Pugh includes Chris Pine, Gemma Chan and Nick Kroll. And also Harry Styles and his many voices.

You are almost certainly aware of the drama around this particular production and if you’re not, you can do a quick Google search for one of the dishiest behind-the-scenes scandals in recent Hollywood memory. None of what went on behind the camera means Don’t Worry Darling won’t be good. Only what goes on in front of the camera can do that. Maybe the clip will make sense in context. Maybe Styles sinks into the role. We don’t have those answers just yet. We only have lots of questions, and one big one: What accent is Harry Styles going for here?
