Prime Video just gave fans their first look at Carrie, and if the teaser is any indication, Mike Flanagan isn’t interested in a straightforward remake.
The first trailer debuted at Comic-Con over the weekend, revealing an Oct. 7 premiere date and a modern take on Stephen King’s 1974 novel. While the familiar beats are all there — the prom, the blood and the telekinetic chaos — Flanagan’s version shifts the story into the social media era, where viral humiliation can spread faster than ever.
Summer H. Howell stars as Carrie White, a sheltered teenager raised by her fiercely religious mother, Margaret, played by Samantha Sloyan. The casting is a fitting reunion: Sloyan previously played the unforgettable Bev Keane in Flanagan’s Midnight Mass.
Flanagan said he had little interest in simply revisiting Brian De Palma’s iconic 1976 adaptation.
“The world has changed quite a lot,” he said during the Comic-Con panel.
To update the story, Flanagan invited high school students into the writers’ room to share the realities of growing up today. Their experiences shaped a version of Carrie centered on internet-fueled bullying, active shooter drills and the way social media can immortalize a teenager’s worst day.
“It’s the cruelty in today’s world and how the internet has encouraged cruelty, rewards and celebrates and amplifies it,” Flanagan said. “This is awful for adults to deal with, and for teenagers even more so.”
The series follows Carrie after her father’s death forces her into public high school, where a viral bullying scandal collides with the emergence of her telekinetic powers.
Carrie premieres Oct. 7 on Prime Video.
