Well, Hollywood may be breathing a sigh of relief that the 2021 box office is going out on a high note with Spider-Man: No Way Home doing pre-pandemic numbers over the weekend, but the rest of us are looking forward to the future! Next year is looking a little complicated since omicron probably won’t be the last letter of the Greek alphabet we have to deal with, but that hasn’t slowed down filmmaking auteurs. And one of our auteur-iest is back with the first trailer for his viking epic The Northman.
Yes, fresh off his grimly gorgeous masterpieces The VVitch and The Lighthouse, Robert Eggers has another “The Blank” movie, and it looks like a winner in the tradition of Braveheart or The Gladiator. Grander in scope than either — what filmmaker wouldn’t be interested in trying his hand at a big budget — and featuring a cast to die for, The Northman looks like the sort of cracking adventure yarn that could get those Hollywood suits breathing a little easier. Alexander Skarsgård stars as our North man himself, and he’s joined by his brother Bill, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe and Björk? Forget about it. That’s how you get people in seats.
