After years of internet jokes about his eccentric roles, Nicolas Cage has finally outdone himself: he’s stepping into the sandals of Joseph, earthly father of Jesus, in a supernatural horror film called The Carpenter’s Son.
The film, which hits theaters this fall, promises to reimagine Christ’s boyhood years as a supernatural horror story. Director Lotfy Nathan is drawing from the apocryphal Gospel of Thomas to spin a tale set in Roman Egypt, where Mary (played by FKA Twigs) and Joseph are hiding out with their miracle kid.
According to the official synopsis, their son — known only as “the Boy” and played by Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place) — begins doubting his guardian and flexing powers that put the whole family in the crosshairs of both natural and divine terrors.
But the big question here isn’t theological, it’s casting. FKA Twigs as Mary? Inspired. Noah Jupe as Jesus? Sure. Nicolas Cage as Joseph? Somewhere between bold and baffling. The man is 60. Twigs is 36. If Jesus is 10, the math requires Olympic-level suspension of disbelief. Was no one else available? Did Andrew Garfield screen your calls? Did Adam Driver not pick up the phone? At this point, Hollywood seems convinced Cage can play literally anyone — a vampire, himself, and now, apparently, the earthly father of God.
