Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor are an unhappy couple barely making it through COVID lockdown when an opportunity knocks in the form of a rare diamond to which they both happen to have access. In other words, here’s a marriage that’s going to save itself the old-fashioned way: a daring diamond heist in the middle of a global pandemic.
Doug Liman is the director behind movies like Edge of Tomorrow, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and The Bourne Identity, so nobody can say he doesn’t know his way around this kind of material. But then, this movie was made during COVID-19, so the playing field is a little flatter across the board. Some people might wonder if it’s a little too soon to be using the pandemic as a backdrop for an action/romance situation but, well, Hathaway and Ejiofor are welcome additions to any television screen and anyway, heist movies are almost always a good time. Also, you’ve got Mindy Kaling, Ben Stiller, Stephen Merchant, Dulé Hill and Ben Kingsley so, well, how bad could it possibly be? We’ll know for sure on January 14 when this one drops on HBOMax.
